The PA Spring Lawn Treatment Schedule (Month-by-Month)

Pre-emergent, fertilizer, weed control, and seeding — when each step needs to happen in Carbon County.

The 2026 Carbon County spring schedule

Climate matters more than the calendar, but here's the rough month-by-month plan that works for most Lehighton-area lawns.

March (early)

  • Spring cleanup. Rake out matted leaves, debris, sticks. Edge the beds.
  • Soil test (optional). $15 at the Penn State Extension office. Tells you exactly what your lawn needs.

March (late) – Early April

  • Pre-emergent crabgrass control. Critical timing — must go down before forsythia blooms drop. Miss this window and you're fighting crabgrass all summer.
  • Mower tune-up. Sharp blades, fresh oil.

Mid-April

  • First mow at 3″ – 3.5″.
  • Spring fertilizer (slow-release, light application).

Late April – May

  • Mulch installs. Best time of year — soil is workable, weeds haven't taken over.
  • Spot weed control for any breakthroughs.

May

  • Aeration if you missed fall. Pair with overseeding.
  • Adjust mowing height up to 3.5″ – 4″ as temps climb.

Late May – June

  • Second fertilizer round (lighter — don't push growth in heat).
  • Watch for grub damage — patches that pull up like carpet.

Don't DIY this if...

You're not sure on timing, you have pets/kids and don't want to handle granular chemicals, or your lawn is in rough shape and you want it fixed right.
